Hardwood Floor Installation From Start To Finish
Several steps go into the installation of a hardwood floor, and our flooring installation experts will take care of all of them for you.
Inspection
The first step is to take a look at the space and ensure that we know what is needed in order to ensure that the new floor can be installed.
Removal of current floor
Where removal is required, the work may involve taking up carpet, old hardwood or floor tiles. Some existing surfaces can remain only when their condition and the selected flooring system allow it. We assess this before confirming the scope.
Sub-floor preparation
The subfloor must be flat, dry and structurally sound within the selected product’s requirements. Preparation depends on the existing concrete or wood base and can include approved flattening, repairs and moisture control. Plywood is used only where the planned assembly requires it.
Acoustic underlay installation
Where required, a compatible acoustic underlay or adhesive system is selected for the flooring method and building requirements. Condo approval and acoustic performance should be confirmed for the complete floor assembly before material is ordered.
Hardwood floor installation
With preparation complete, the floor is installed using a method approved for the selected product and subfloor. Options may include glue-down, floating, nailing or stapling. Not every hardwood product supports every method.
Finishing touches
Some additional services that we offer include the installation of baseboards, quarter round, shoe molding and reducers.

Subfloor, transitions and condo requirements
A flooring assessment should identify movement, moisture concerns, uneven areas and the preparation needed before installation. Door clearances, transitions and the connection to stairs also belong in the plan. For a condo, obtain the building’s flooring, acoustic, elevator-booking and working-hour requirements before ordering material.

What should your installation estimate include?

Hardwood Floor Installation Questions
Can hardwood flooring be installed over concrete?
Yes, when the selected product and installation system are approved for the slab. Many engineered hardwood products allow glue-down or floating installation over prepared concrete. Moisture testing, slab flatness, grade level and any required moisture-control system must be checked first. See our engineered hardwood options.
Can hardwood flooring be glued down?
Some hardwood products can be glued down, but approval depends on the board construction, subfloor and adhesive system. Follow the flooring and adhesive manufacturers’ current instructions, including surface preparation and moisture limits. A glue-down method should be confirmed before you order flooring or underlay.
Can hardwood flooring be installed over existing hardwood?
Sometimes. The existing floor must be sound, securely fixed and suitable for the new product’s installation method. Moisture, flatness and the extra finished height also need assessment. If the existing wood is worth keeping, compare hardwood floor refinishing before covering or removing it.
Can you float hardwood flooring?
Only products specifically approved for floating installation should be floated. Some engineered floors use click joints; others require glued joints. Solid hardwood should not be assumed suitable. The specified underlay, expansion space and building requirements are part of the complete system.
Can hardwood flooring acclimate in the box?
It depends on the product. Some manufacturers require flooring to stay in its original packaging during acclimation. Follow the selected collection’s instructions for packaging, indoor conditions and moisture checks. A fixed number of days alone does not establish that every floor is ready to install.
How much hardwood flooring should I buy?
Start with the measured installation area, add the allowance for cuts and selection recommended for the product and layout, then round up to full cartons. Straight planks, diagonal layouts and herringbone can need different allowances. Have the installer confirm the order quantity and any spare boards before purchase.
